Feeling stressed? Your skin may be feeling it, too. In fact, stress is one of the most common factors that cause your skin and body to age.
Chronic stress has been proven to affect your health negatively.1 It can also accelerate the aging of your cells because your telomeres shorten at the end of chromosomes in your DNA.
Telomeres are found on each DNA strand in your skin cells. These telomeres get shorter every time a cell divides. If you have shorter telomeres, that means you have older skin cells. This is usually when you’ll start seeing fine lines and wrinkles.
Longer telomeres support youthful, firm and radiant skin.
But just because chronic stress can shorten your telomeres – and cause your skin to age – it doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it.
Today I want to show you a few sure-fire ways to fight stress and protect your skin for a youthful glow, no matter what your age.
One big stress buster that’s also great for keeping your skin looking youthful is exercise.
A recent study looked at the connection between exercise and stress.1 Here’s what they did:
Healthy post-menopausal women were split into two different groups, sedentary and active. They exercised vigorously for three days in a row. And during this time, they observed how likely their telomeres were to shorten as a result of stress and exercise, taking into account body mass index, age and education.
The result? The women in the sedentary group had a 15-fold increase in shorter telomeres. The women who exercised regularly didn’t show any connection between stress and telomere length.1
That shows us that exercise can actually help prevent chronic stress from affecting our telomeres and help keep our skin from aging prematurely – from the inside out.
But exercise is just one part of the puzzle.
You can help support your telomeres and preserve your youthful skin from the inside out – and the outside in.
Here’s what I mean…
Every day when you go outside your skin is exposed to harsh pollutants, toxins and free radicals. These things put stress on your body and your skin… and that stress often will attack the telomeres in your skin and can cause them to get shorter. Making you look older before your time.
The good news is there are ways you can fight back. And the best way I’ve found to combat these skin-destroyers is with a combination of exercise and a good skin-care regimen.
A good skin-care regimen should include products that help slow down, or even reverse your skin’s aging by maintaining your telomere length. It should also promote healthy cell growth and help improve the quality of your skin so you’ll look and feel more youthful. With the right products, you may even notice your once-visible wrinkles are starting to fade away forever.
But chances are you won’t be able to find these kinds of products at the drug store or a fancy department store. In fact, those products can actually cause more damage to your skin.
That’s why I recommend Pure Radiance’s Ultimate Skin Care Regimen to my patients. It has everything you need to fight free radicals and other external damage to help keep your telomeres long and your skin glowing.
