How To Protect Your Hair

Protect Your Hair in Summer

Let’s be honest, there aren’t too many things better than being poolside cool this time of year. Splashing around in the water on a hot summer day is invigorating…

But summertime can be very hard on our hair. Before you dive in to the deep end this summer, here is what you need to know…

Swimming has many wonderful benefits for your body. It is a great low impact therapy that helps alleviate stress and improves coordination, balance, flexibility and posture.

However, the chemical disinfectants that keep swimming pools sanitary and clean are harmful to your hair. While chlorine is at work killing germs, it is also cleaning things you don’t want it to clean. For example, the most important protective layers on your hair.

Chlorine strips sebum from your scalp and hair. Repeated exposure to chlorine dehydrates and injures the hair follicle, which can lead to breakage, loss of shine and split ends.

A new study found that chlorine causes a chemical reaction inside your hair shaft.1 This reaction changes the electrical charge of minerals bonded to hair and they oxidize, resulting in damage and/or discoloration from lack of natural oils.

Did you know…

  • Chlorine is one of approximately 100 natural chemical elements, the basic building blocks of our planet.
  • Over the course of several decades—scientists have used chlorine and the products of chlorine chemistry to modify water and destroy life-threatening germs in homes, hospitals, swimming pools, hotels, restaurants and other public places.
  • It’s powerful disinfectant qualities come from its ability to bond with and destroy the outer surfaces of bacteria and viruses.
  • Every year, approximately 13.6 million metric tons of chlorine are produced in North America.

Proactively Protect Your Hair from Chlorinated Pools

If you swim, there’s not a lot you can do to prevent the damage. But these simple tips will help keep your hair healthy no matter how often you expose it to chlorine in the pool.

  • Coat the hair with coconut oil or olive oil or a non-toxic leave in conditioner
  • Wet hair with non-chlorinated water before entering the pool
  • Wear a swimming cap

Always rinse your hair after immediately after chlorine exposure and use a moisture rich conditioning treatment.
